Job Description:
The Optics department of L3Harris in Rochester, NY is looking for a seasoned CNC Machinist in the Optical Manufacturing area. This group is responsible for the manufacturing of optical components of exceptional quality for ground and space-based astronomical, high energy laser, and earth imaging applications. Individuals must communicate with and understand directions from the design and project engineering communities during design & manufacturing phases of projects. These individuals will need to be able to operate manual and computer-controlled optical manufacturing equipment and inspect the optics for surface quality and defects. Individuals should be familiar with various precision manufacturing techniques used to fabricate, integrate and validate optics. Additional activities may include performing processing experiments, handling and transporting of optical components. Members work to engineering drawings, manufacturing instructions, procedures, process specifications, schematics, sketches or verbal instructions.
Essential Functions:
- Set up, operate, and maintain 5-axis CNC machine to produce complex precision parts to exacting tolerances.
- Experience with abrasive waterjet cutting systems (e.g., Flow, Omax, Wardjet, etc.), including setup, operation, and basic troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of CNC programming (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar CAM software.
- Interpret engineering drawings, and CAD/CAM models to ensure proper machining strategies and dimensions.
- Perform machine setup, including tool selection, fixture mounting, and program verification.
- Inspect parts using precision measurement tools (e.g. micrometers, calipers, etc.) to verify conformance to specifications.
- Troubleshoot and adjust machining processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow established safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve technical issues and improve machining processes.
- Document job setups and recommend process improvements to reduce setup time and increase repeatability.
- Participate in large optics moves as part of a move crew.
Qualifications:
- Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience or 2 years post-Secondary/Associate’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience, an Associate’s degree in optical technology or equivalent preferred.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Prior experience in basic Microsoft Office software applications.
- Familiarity with fixturing for irregular parts.
- Coursework in basic optics and optical systems.
- Experience in optic fabrication
- Experience in the Aerospace or Defense industry.
- Understanding and application of Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T) General understanding of manufacturing and assembly techniques used to fabricate optics.
- Able to write task procedures & processes under Engineering guidance.
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York State is $30.79/hr - $57.21/hr. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
