L3 HARRIS DOD SKILLBRIDGE SUCCESS STORIES

Sean Harris Meet Sean Harris

What is your Military background?

I first joined the Army in May of 2001 as an AH64-D Apache Armament, Electrical, Avionics and Sub-systems Technician. Through my 22 years as an enlisted member, I was able to reach the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). I was assigned many roles including Maintenance Technician, Maintenance Leader, Section Leader, Quality Control, Production Control, Instructor as well Company First Sergeant for over 200 Soldiers.

What inspired you to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Program at L3Harris?

During my time in the service, we used many L3Harris products in avionics and communication, so I was familiar with the L3Harris name. I felt that being that L3Harris has such an impact on the Military it would be my way of giving back to a company that has helped in so many ways as well to continue to serve (through L3Harris) to Service members.

What was your experience like at L3Harris during the program?

During the program, I was able to support the Space and Airborne Systems team with their cellular technologies program and work with many insightful people. Everyone was truly professional and friendly. I could tell that L3Harris is a company that treats their employees as family.

How was this internship helpful in your Military transition?

Participating in the internship during my transition was helpful to rejoin the civilian workforce slowly while exiting the Military. Also, provided me a steppingstone into a company that I was very interested in being a part of.

What is your role now at L3Harris?

My current role at L3Harris is a Depot Manager. However, I am also helping with some technical writing for another program. One of the things that I do enjoy about L3Harris is that they allow the employees to assist with other programs during some of the downtime that we have.

What advice would you give to other Veterans who are considering participating in the DoD SkillBridge Program at L3Harris?

Start your paperwork early on the Military side and make sure that you double and triple check for errors or new policies that are in place. I was very lucky to have a chain of command that was willing to work with me in my transition into the civilian sector. Also, make sure that you talk to your leaders on the requirements of the process so they will be able to help you when needed.

Chris Smith Meet Chris Smith

What is your Military background?

I spent the last 20 years working in the supply chain field in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard. In that time, I had the opportunity to deploy multiple times to the middle east and participate in a state partnership exercise in Slovakia. In my time in the Air Force, I supported many airframes such as the A-10, F-16, F-15, C-130, KC-135 and C-17.

What inspired you to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Program at L3Harris?

I believed that my Military experience and education would translate well into a position within the defense industry, so I limited my search to only the big names in the industry. After researching the companies’ values and culture, I quickly came to the conclusion that L3Harris was where I wanted to be.

What was your experience like at L3Harris during the program?

My SkillBridge experience with L3Harris was great! Everyone on my team was very welcoming throughout my internship. When I began as a L3Harris employee, I was able to hit the ground running, as I was already familiar with programs and my team.

How was this internship helpful in your Military transition?

Having spent the last 20 years in the Military, and not knowing how the “real world” operates from a business or supply chain perspective, I knew that I had a disadvantage in finding meaningful employment after retiring from the Air Force. Being able to participate in SkillBridge with L3Harris allowed me to gain invaluable, real-world, industry experience. Gaining this knowledge and experience allowed me to apply and be very competitive for full-time/paid positions within the company.

What is your role now at L3Harris?

I am currently a Material Manager, Sr. Specialist.

What advice would you give to other Veterans who are considering participating in the DoD SkillBridge Program at L3Harris?

The best advice that I can give to other Veterans who are considering participating in a Department of Defense SkillBridge Internship with L3Harris is…. Do it!!! The ability to transition into the civilian world via an internship is an amazing advantage that I would recommend anyone. Lastly, I am always happy to help a fellow Veteran, so find me on LinkedIn!

L3Harris also partnered with and presented a grant to the organization Homes for our Troops (HFOT). The grant promotes the HFOT mission to build and donate specially adapted custom homes to severely injured post-9/11 Veterans to help them rebuild their lives. HFOT homes are built in the communities of the veteran’s choosing—often near L3Harris locations. Company employees are given opportunities to engage with HFOT during community kickoff events, volunteer days and key ceremonies.
