Job Description:
The Senior Specialist, Systems Engineer leads the design, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of complex software-intensive systems across the full engineering lifecycle. This role works with hardware, software, and external interfaces to define requirements, support API and subsystem integration, resolve issues, and ensure strong system performance in distributed environments. The ideal candidate brings strong systems engineering experience, hands-on software skills, and the ability to support modem integration, troubleshoot RS-429 interfaces, and help sustain mission-critical communications systems on ground and airborne platforms.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance.
- This position includes an expectation of 10–15% shift, on-call, or weekend work.
- Support the design, integration, and sustainment of robust, scalable, and secure system solutions aligned with mission and customer requirements.
- Develop, integrate, and support software-based solutions in distributed system environments.
- Assist with system implementation activities, including upgrades, enhancements, configuration changes, and troubleshooting efforts.
- Translate customer and operational needs into system-level requirements and technical solutions.
- Support software design, development, integration, verification, and test activities across complex systems.
- Collaborate with software and cross-functional engineering teams to resolve technical issues and improve system performance.
- Perform system troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and issue resolution for software-intensive environments.
- Apply systems engineering processes, including requirements analysis, traceability, verification, and validation.
- Contribute to trade studies, technical analyses, and design evaluations to support architecture and implementation decisions.
- Develop and maintain subsystem, interface, and software specifications derived from system requirements.
- Review technical documentation, architecture products, and interface definitions for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with requirements.
- Develop and execute test procedures to verify system and software performance and ensure compliance with requirements.
- Monitor system and application performance to support reliability, availability, and maintainability objectives.
- Prepare and maintain system, software, interface, deployment, and test documentation.
- Generate technical reports related to system performance, risks, issues, and project status.
- Design, develop, and troubleshoot software solutions using Python, Java, and scripting languages to support automation, integration, testing, and operational needs.
- Interpret and troubleshooting RS-429 communication labels and interfaces in support of system integration, testing, and issue resolution.
- Apply knowledge of software development practices, API integration, and distributed systems to support development and integration efforts.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant Systems Engineering and/or Software Engineering experience.
- Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related Systems Engineering and/or Software Engineering experience.
- In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of prior related Systems Engineering and/or Software Engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing software and system test plans, integration activities, and verification efforts.
- Demonstrated ability to translate customer needs into system-level requirements and support requirements traceability.
- Demonstrated experience with technical documentation, interface definitions, and cross-functional engineering collaboration.
- Demonstrated experience supporting secure or government environments, including DoD systems or accreditation activities, is preferred.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Active Secret or TS/SCI clearance strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of software development practices, system integration, and troubleshooting in complex environments.
- Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot RS-429 communication labels and interfaces in support of system integration, testing, and issue resolution.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and security frameworks such as NIST.
- Experience in systems engineering for complex software-centric systems, including design, integration, verification, validation, and troubleshooting.
- Software development skills, with the ability to write, debug, and troubleshoot applications, automation tools, and scripts using Python, Java, and other scripting languages.
- Experience supporting software integration, test, and deployment activities in distributed or mission-critical environments.
- Experience with containerized environments and orchestration platforms.
- Experience with API development, integration, and troubleshooting in distributed systems.
- Familiarity with DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software development tools and practices.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and secure system deployment in regulated environments.
- Experience developing technical documentation, interface definitions, test procedures, and verification artifacts.
- Ability to interpret and troubleshoot RS-429 communication labels and interfaces in support of integration, testing, and issue resolution.
- Ability to support cross-functional engineering efforts across requirements, design, integration, test, and issue resolution activities.
- Experience supporting DoD, classified, or mission-critical environments preferred.
