Job Description:
The L3Harris Spectral Solutions division is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the development of advanced space-based remote sensing systems for missile warning and missile defense missions. This role will contribute to the design, development, integration, and evaluation of next-generation sensor capabilities focused on detection and tracking, algorithm development, calibration, and performance verification.
The Senior Specialist Systems Engineer will work across multidisciplinary teams to define system requirements, support sensor and payload performance analysis, and help mature technical solutions from concept through test and validation. The role will have a strong emphasis on developing and assessing detection and tracking approaches, supporting algorithm design and refinement, and ensuring sensor calibration and verification activities are executed to meet mission performance objectives.
Key responsibilities include analyzing sensor system performance, developing and evaluating algorithms for target detection and tracking, supporting calibration planning and execution, defining verification methods and success criteria, and working closely with hardware, software, modeling and simulation, and test teams to ensure end-to-end system effectiveness. The role also includes supporting technical reviews, risk reduction efforts, and the translation of mission needs into actionable engineering requirements.
Ideal candidates will have experience with infrared or electro-optical sensing systems, space or missile defense mission applications, systems engineering processes, and performance assessment methods. Strong analytical skills, technical collaboration, and the ability to work across the full development lifecycle are essential.

Essential Functions:
•    Support development of image and video processing algorithm solutions for space based infrared systems.
•    Perform performance analyses of image and video processing algorithms in support of system level trade studies. Support systems engineering trade studies, CONOP development, and modeling/simulation efforts.
•    Work alongside embedded software and firmware teams who optimize and implement algorithms for space-based systems.
•    Comfortable writing code in Python and/or C/C++
•    Develop and improve instrument documentation, processes, and test procedures
•    Support concept of operation development and requirements analysis, decomposition, and generation at various levels of the system
•    Support requirements traceability and development of test plans to cover requirements
•    Support integration and test of electro-optical/infrared systems and related hardware/software
•    Provide support to engineering in developing technical specifications, interface control documents, test plans and procedures, and test conformance to specifications
•    Support engineering in the verification of compliance to requirements and validate performance behavior
•    Utilize work experience to become Subject Matter Expert in the relative area
•    Job is onsite in Fort Wayne, Indiana

Qualifications:
•    Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related STEM discipline and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; or a Graduate degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
•    Eligibility to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.

Preferred Additional Skills:
•    Experience in spacecraft, satellite, or other complex aerospace system development with responsibility at the subsystem, system, or vehicle level.
•    Experience architecting, analyzing, developing, and integrating end to end systems in areas such as EO/IR, RF, or space payload and spacecraft bus subsystems
•    Experience with requirements management, interface control, system integration, verification and validation, and technical baseline management across the product lifecycle.
•    Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), requirements management tools, and configuration management processes.
•    Experience developing embedded software / firmware
•    Inter-personal and communication skills, ability to interact with a cross functional team
•    Ability to collaborate across all levels of leadership
•    Able to work with general direction or supervision in a demanding environment 
•    Experience with data analysis and/or modeling and simulation
•    Experience with estimating and managing costs
•    Familiarity with program management, cost account management, integrated product teams
•    Active security clearance
•    Proficient in use of Python
•    Ability to work effectively across cross-functional engineering teams, communicate technical issues clearly to leadership, and support execution in a multi-site development environment.
