L3Harris in Eight Mile Plains is The Centre of Excellence for Electronic Warfare and is home to world-leading design, manufacture and integration expertise and the sustainment of high-reliability electronic warfare components. Our highly skilled workforce design and develop Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities such as the next-generation space, airborne and cyber capabilities for the Australian warfighter.

We’re seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to architect and develop advanced embedded software applications and contribute across the full software development lifecycle.

What the role will involve

The responsibilities of your role will include the following:

  • Lead complex software architecture across multiple systems.
  • Manage development schedules and report to stakeholders.
  • Develop secure, robust C++ code for defence applications.
  • Contribute across all SDLC phases—from design to verification.
  • Present technical designs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and management.
  • Mentor junior engineers in development and debugging best practices.
  • Maintain internal and customer documentation.
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing and demonstrations.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation.

What you’ll bring

To succeed in this role, you’ll need the following experience and skills:

  • Degree in Software, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Active NV2 Security Clearance
  • 7+ years’ experience in a similar role
  • Proven experience architecting complex embedded software with structured verification practices
  • Skilled in developing C++ software for microcontrollers (bare metal or RTOS) with interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multi disciplinary teams, following established development processes
  • Strong computer literacy and excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with Xilinx Zynq SoCs
  • Firmware development using VHDL and/or Verilog for FPGAs
  • Knowledge of software developed to meet protocol standards or mission critical requirements
  • Ability to read hardware schematics, identify software related design issues, and recommend improvements
  • Experience developing custom peripheral interfaces and complex algorithms on programmable logic
  • Proficiency in Python or other scripting languages for hardware emulation or software verification
  • Experience building high level software applications (web or desktop)
